Sumiha's Martial Arts
class is an innovative program specially designed for children 3 to 7 years of age. Combining basic martial arts techniques with physical activities (exercise), and learning games, children enjoy a fun, productive experience safely. While developing improved fitness, coordination, concentration, and confidence, the class also instills important values such as respect, courtesy and self-control. The result is a gstudenth who is physically strong and mentally positive and ready to meet the challenges of school life and beyond. This very personal class allows me to bring out each childfs best on an individual basis.
What
kind of Martial Arts? What will they learn?
The most important and the first thing children
lean in the class is
"The
idea of leaning martial arts is to protect your self, not to harm
others. " The martial arts
method that I teach is based on Shorinji Kempo which is a mixture
of ancient Chinese and Japanese martial arts (Karate) techniques.
This training philosophy believes spirit and body are inseparable.
In this way, Kempo has been known to have three benefits:
self-defense and training, mental training and promoting health.
Sumiha's Martial Arts program is designed to promote
both physical and mental strength working side by side in
balanced harmony. In order to use your physical martial arts
skills properly, your mind has to be just as strong as body.
I've created a non aggressive, non fighting style, age-appropriate
curriculum in which your child can focus on their own personal
advancement in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere. Children
participate in obstacle courses, skill-based activities and
physical challenges that increase agility and awareness. Through
the program children will learn to co-operate with others and help
each other. After a couple of weeks of practice, student will feel
stronger and calmer.

SUMIHA
AKIYAMA MATH, sensei
I have been a student of Shorinji Kempo for the past twenty years. Martial Arts has always been an integral part of my life, since my father, Tsutomu Akiyama (7-dan black belt) is a Shorinji Kempo branch Master in Japan who has owned and operated a school for children and adults, adjacent to our home, for over 35 years. I began gofficialh lessons in Shorinji Kempo at the age of three. By the age of eleven, I had participated and won many competitions and was awarded a Black Belt, then 2-dan degree. With these achievements, I became an assistant teacher at the school, specializing in groups of young children. I also was the director and teacher of the summer camp programs. Today, as the Mother of a preschooler, I am acutely aware of the merits of these classes and the special delight in gworkingh with young children. I know that my training in martial arts as a child and young adult has helped me live an interesting, productive life, attending school in New Zealand, Italy, graduating college in Switzerland and France and now enjoying California with my husband and two daughters. I sincerely want to have the privilege of teaching your children these good lessons, which result in happy, self-confident boys and girls |
